Windows Update is a web-based software update service for Microsoft Windows operating systems. It offers a location for downloading critical system component updates, service packs, security fixes, patches and free upgrades to selected Windows components. Additionally, it automatically detects the user's hardware and provides driver updates when available, and can offer beta versions of some Microsoft programs.

Firefox includes an integrated pop-up blocker, tabbed browsing, live bookmarks, support for open standards, and an extension mechanism for adding functionality. Although other browsers have some of these features, Firefox became the first such browser to include them all and achieve wide adoption.

Firefox has attracted attention as an alternative to other browsers such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Apple Safari, which are included as standard with versions of Windows and MacOS X respectively. This is the main stumbling block for competing browsers as many novice users are unaware of alternatives.

The Macromedia Flash Player is a multimedia and application player created and distributed by Macromedia (a division of Adobe Systems). Flash Player runs SWF files that can be created by the Macromedia Flash authoring tool, Macromedia Flex or a number of other Macromedia and third party tools. Following Adobe's purchase of Macromedia, it will be rebranded "Adobe Flash Player" as of version 9.
